Griffins Throne Review
Griffin's Throne is an IGT powered game that plays out on 5 reels, 4 rows and 30 ways to win, at least initially. At any time, you can trigger massive 12-row multiplier pillar reels, and these can deliver stacks of multiplier wilds up to 10x. The bonus round plays out on nothing but 12-row reels, and payouts up to 11,111x is possible in this volatile ode to greek mythology.
The griffin, griffon or gryphon is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. You will see IGT’s animated version occupy prime real estate on the game screen here, as the reels are placed underneath it. This is done to make space for the massive 12-row multiplier pillars that shoot up now and then, but it also makes the game feel a bit off-balance and dated.
The multiplier pillar, and the respin you get with it, is a very welcome break from the base game grind however. We landed some pretty decent wins from this feature in our 200 spins test session (more about that further down in the review). If you can look past the somewhat clumsy set up of this game, it’s actually quite decent. Especially high rollers should appreciate it, due to the unusually high max bet of £2,250 per spin, and the insane £25 million max win cap.

Griffin's Throne Features
The Sun symbol can be seen shining through the background above the reels as a teaser, which should tell you how important it is in this game. Landing only 1 Sun symbol on any reel triggers the Multiplier Pillar feature, but it’s possible to land a Sun symbol on all 5 reels at the same time.
When you land at least 1 Sun symbol, you will first see all instances of the highest value Griffin symbol become frozen in place. The same goes for any wild symbols present on the reels. The reel(s) where the Sun symbol landed will then have a massive 12-rows pillar shoot up in front of it. This new 12-rows “pillar reel” will only contain stacks of four 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x multiplier wilds, as well as stacks of four regular wilds.
You will then get a free re-spin where only the 12-rows pillar reel and the non-locked symbols spin.
Extra wilds can also appear on the regular reels now, and if you have more than one multiplier wild involved in a winning combo, the respective multiplier values are added together. To trigger the free spins bonus round in Griffin’s Throne slot, you need to land at least 3 temple scatters on the same spin. This gives you 10 free spins to start with, and you will now see all 5 reels stretch to the maximum height of 12 rows. This increases the number of paylines from 30 to 90, and you can trigger the Multiplier Respin feature via the Sun symbols here too.
Landing at least 2 new temple scatters gives you extra spins, and you get 3 or 10 spins from landing 2 or 3 scatters, respectively. You can win up to 150 free spins in total here, and between 6 and 13 reel positions can turn wild when you trigger the Multiplier Respin feature.
The 200 Spins Griffin's Throne Experience
When we first laid eyes on this game, without knowing too much about it, we didn’t quite get why the reels were so small compared to the rest of the game screen. It didn’t take us too many spins to figure it out however, and you’ll see plenty of the giant Multiplier Respin Pillar in our test session video highlights below.
Review Summary
The Griffin stands there on his throne, on top of the reels, squeaking and flapping its wings whenever something happens. It’s a bit strange that the reels take up so little space on the game screen, at least until you land your first Multiplier Pillar. However, other games with expanding reel sets come across as more sophisticated than this, as they zoom in and out when necessary.
Anyway, the multiplier pillar respin brings some decent thrills to the base game, and it can also bring solid wins in our experience. This is even more likely in the bonus round, with all reels fully expanded, and we like the possibility of racking up plenty of extra spins too.
A max win of 11,111x is certainly an auspicious number, but the minimum bet size of 75p might be a bit high for some casual players. High rollers should rejoice though, as bets up to £2,250 per spin is probably solid enough for most of them.Pros
- 12-rows multiplier wild reel respin feature
- Free spins with expanded 5x12 reel set
- Medium to high volatility and 11,111x max win potential
Cons
- Regular reel set is very small
- Beware of customizable RTP ranges
