The Mummy Books of Amun Ra Review
It was all the way back in the infamous Mayan Calendar end-date year, 2012, that Playtech released their first branded effort based on the Hollywood blockbuster franchise, simply called The Mummy. It therefore makes sense that they follow up on that release in this numerically related and tumultuous year, 2021, and The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra is certainly a worthy sequel.
Rick O’Connell (Brandan Fraser) is the top-tier premium symbol, awarding 500x your stake for 5-oak wins. Evelyn O’Connell (Rachel Weisz) follows right behind, and all of the 5 main characters have their own dedicated bonus round. All features are based around the Book of ... mechanic concept with expanding symbol(s), and it’s all up to you to choose your own destiny and see how close you can get to the 10,000x potential.

As is usually the case in ‘Book slots’, the Book symbol serves double duty as both wild and scatter. As a wild, it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combinations. You need at least 3 book wild/scatters anywhere in sight to trigger the Bonus Round however, and you also get a scatter win of 2, 20 or 200 times your stake when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively.

The Bonus Round is triggered once every 171 spins on average, and you get to choose between 5 different features based around each main character from the movie:
- Rick O’Connell - awards 10 free spins with a special expanding symbol chosen up front. The expanding symbol pays scatter style if enough instances land, and this is the standard ‘book slot’ mechanic feature. The feature can be retriggered with up to 100 spins in total.
- The Scorpion King - awards 8 free spins, and it comes with the same ‘book mechanic’ as the above feature. The big difference is that each retrigger awards an additional expanding symbol, plus 8 extra spins.
- Imhotep - awards 12 free spins where the lowest-tier ‘J’ symbol is chosen as the expanding symbol. Each win removes the current expanding symbol from the reels completely, and the next tier symbol is chosen to be the special expanding one. Land 3+ wild/scatters to win +3 extra spins up to 100 at the most.
- Anck-Su-Namun - awards 8 free spins with a chosen expanding symbol. A full stack of this symbol appears on each free spin, but there is no way to win extra spins in this feature.
- Evelyn O’Connell - awards only 4 free spins with a randomly chosen expanding symbol. If you land 2 book wild/scatters, the grid increases by 1 row and you get 1 extra spin. Land 3 book wild/scatters, and 1 row is added while you get 4 extra spins. You can get up to 3 extra rows, and this amounts to a total of 16 paylines.
The 200 Spins The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra Experience
We had a few smaller wins here and there, and a couple of close-call Book scatter teasers in the base game. The bonus round was finally triggered at 1:30 into the 6 and a half minute highlights video, and we went with the 12-spins Imhotep feature. Hit the play button below, and see for yourself how we fared.
Review Summary
A proper branded effort in the ‘Book of’ genre is something we’ve been missing for a while, and the ‘The Mummy Returns’ (2001) theme is a nice break from the standard Egyptian tombs. The base game is the usual somewhat tedious quicksand grind, but at least you have 5 exciting variations of the ‘Book of’ mechanic bonus round to look forward to in this follow-up release.
One feature is similar to Book of Dead, another to Legacy of Dead, while the last 3 are more unique. The most volatile 4-spins option can be quite brutal, but it’s also your best shoot at cracking the 10,000x potential.
We quite like the 12-spins feature also, with symbols upgrade and removal. Having plenty of options is never wrong, and The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra will potentially have a longer shelf-life than many Ra copycats.Pros
- Based on the The Mummy Returns (2001)
- 5 ‘Book of’ mechanic FS options
- Win up to 10,000x your stake
Cons
- Tedious base game with no features
If you love The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra you should also try:
Dig Dig Digger - is one of very few other branded ‘Book slots’ out there, and the Russian comedian the character is based upon, Vadim Galygin, contributes with action commentary. It’s a very standard installment otherwise, and the bonus round comes with a chosen expanding symbol for payouts up to 5,500x your stake.
Rick and Morty Megaways - takes you on a wild adventure with the eccentric drunken scientist Rick, and his somewhat naive grandson Morty. This branded Blueprint effort comes with cascading wins, mystery symbols and 4 options in the bonus round. The volatility is high, and you can win up to 50,000x your stake.
The Mummy - is the original branded Playtech release based around the same movie, and it comes with a Lost City Adventure Bonus that contains 6 features. You can also look forward to a Mummy Hunt bonus, as well as free spins for payouts up to 10,000x your stake.
Book of Mummy - is an adventurous slot game set in ancient Egypt.
Unlock the secrets of the mummy's tomb with free spins and expanding symbols, offering a chance to win up to 10,000x your stake.Related Slots
