Misery Mining is a volatile mining slot follow-up from NoLimit City, and the default 3x3 grid expands to 7x7 via the Collapsing Mine xBomb mechanic. This also increases the win multiplier, giving you a highly dynamic base game experience. Choose between Mouse and Rat mode when the bonus round triggers, and both come with plenty of innovative modifiers and extras. You can win up to 70,000x your stake, and our full review is available below the free demo game.

Misery Mining Review

The already angry roughneck mining dwarf from NoLimit City’s original hit release, Fire in the Hole, has now grown into a bitter, grizzled alcoholic. While he was frantically digging for his long lost case of cold ones in his younger days, the stakes are higher in this somewhat darker Misery Mining. The Collapsing Mine dynamic reels engine alone makes this a worthwhile experience, and the potential has been bumped up to an even more solid 70,000x your stake.

NoLimit City has an incredible ability to keep renewing themselves, and it’s remarkable how they manage to hit one home run after another. The two Misery Bonus Rounds offer highly entertaining, explosive and innovative Money Train 2-inspired action, while the base game is kept simpler than usual, which is actually kind of a relief. The xBomb Wild takes center stage also here, expanding the 3x3 default grid up to 7x7 with 823,543 win ways, while also increasing the win multiplier.

Misery Mining Slot Features

You win by landing 3+ matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right in the active grid area. The premium symbols pay between 5.25 and 16 x your stake for 7 of a kind, and the xBomb Wild triggers the Collapsing Mine mechanic. As a wild, the xBomb steps in for regular pay symbols, and when it explodes it expands the default 3x3 game area.

In addition, winning symbols “collapse” and are removed, making room for new symbols to drop down.

This repeats as long as you keep winning, and the xBomb Wild explodes all adjacent symbols, while also increasing the win multiplier by +1. Everything resets when you hit a losing spin with no more xBombs or scatters in view.

However, if you have accumulated 1 or 2 scatters during the collapsing sequence, each scatter will transform into xBomb symbols that are not wild. The explosion still removes adjacent symbols though, which might prolong your collapsing winning streak. These non-wild xBombs also increase the win multiplier and expand the grid size the same way a regular xBomb Wild does.

The Misery Bonus Round triggers when you land and/or accumulate 3 scatters in the same collapsing sequence, and here’s how it works:

  • 3 scatters award 8 Mouse Mode or 3 Rat Mode FS on a 3x3 starting grid.
  • 3 scatters and 1 super scatter awards 10 Mouse Mode or 3 Rat Mode FS on a 4x4 starting grid.
  • 3 scatters and 2 super scatters awards 12 Mouse Mode or 3 Rat Mode FS on a 5x5 starting grid.

You will choose between Mouse Mode or Rate Mode no matter what tier of the bonus round you trigger, and Rat Mode is an extreme volatility ‘streak respins’ style feature where the respins tally resets to 3 again for each hit. The Mouse Mode version is high volatility, and comes with a fixed number of spins that don’t reset.

You get scatters and super scatters in the active grid area, and these move around to random positions per bonus round spin.

Misery Mining Slot Gameplay 9

Reels 1 and 7 are locked collector positions on each side of the active grid, and the bottom row is blocked at the start. Random enhancer symbols roll in on the top sliding reel, and these activate any scatters and/or super scatters on the reel below. It works as follows:

  • Coin Wagons - adds its value to any scatter types, and then the value is added to the nearest collector position (reel 1 or 7) and the total win.
  • Multiplier - adds its value to the multiplier on super scatters, and the current super scatter multiplier will boost all future coin wagon values being added to the super scatter. Bombs - drop down to open blocked positions, side column collector positions or the bottom row.
  • Bag - collects values from the same row from both scatters and side collectors.
  • Chest - collects all scatter values and unlocked side collector values within a range of 3 reels.
  • Dwarf - sticks to the lowest triggering scatter, and collects all values within a range of 3 reels persistently for the rest of the feature.
  • Rat - can be unlocked from reels 1 and 7, and he then walks down to add value to a locked collector before he unlocks it.
  • Super Scatter - can be activated from enhancer reels 2 and/or 6, and it awards +2 spins in Mouse Mode, while resetting the spin tally to 3 again in Rat Mode.

When you unlock side collector positions, their respective values are added to the total win on every spin that follows. Activating bottom row collector positions makes them collect all the value on the same reel, and this value is also added to the total win persistently on every spin.

Finally, non-UK players, and anyone eligible, may purchase different versions of the bonus round via the NoLimit Bonus Buy feature:

  • Pay 250x your stake for 3 guaranteed scatters + 1 Super Scatter (RTP of 96.61 or 96.72 %. Organic hit rate: 1 in 7,600 spins).
  • Pay 1,000x your stake for 3 guaranteed scatters + 2 Super Scatters (RTP of 96.77 or 96.85 %. Organic hit rate: 1 in 33,000 spins).
  • Pay 439x your stake for Lucky Draw (1/3 chance for either of the features. RTP of 96.62 or 96.69 %).

We decided to go with Mouse Mode in our first attempt, and the feature starts around 1 minute into the 5:13-minute highlights video. We then try our luck in Rat Mode, which plays out from 3:13, and you can check it all out for yourself by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

The dynamic reels experience is even better in this “loose” Fire in the Hole follow-up, and it could’ve given the Megaways engine a run for its money if it wasn’t so tailor-suited to the mining theme. The xBombs land quite frequently, giving you an explosively entertaining base game that’s somewhat less complicated and convoluted than usual. Still, anything can happen when the grid expands from 3x3 to 7x7, awarding up to 823,543 win ways as the win multiplier increases.

The soundtrack is a tad darker perhaps, but similar, and it’s hard to imagine a better sequel to NoLimit City’s original smash hit. The potential has been dialed up to 70,000x your stake, with a decent 1 in 60 million probability from the base game (see FAQ below for more details). The two rodent bonus round modes complete each other like the dwarf and his drink, offering a highly entertaining thrill-ride with plenty of innovation to boot.

If you love Misery Mining Slot you should also try:

Fire in the Hole - is NoLimit City’s original mining slot installment, and you get to meet a younger version of the dwarf in search for his long lost case of beer. The reels are not quite as dynamic perhaps, but the xBomb Wild wreaks havoc also here. The MT2-style bonus round comes with 6 modifiers, and you can win up to 60,000x your stake.

Money Cart 2 - is an offshoot in the ultra-popular Money Train 2 series, and it’s a bonus round-centric release where the hold-and-win style feature triggers with a very high frequency. It comes with the 9 usual MT2 modifier symbols, but the max win potential is reduced to 5,000x your stake.

Dwarfs Fortune - is a pretty solid mining slot from Wazdan, and you get to choose your preferred pace and volatility from 3 settings. The top cart reel awards multiplier and modifiers, and the big highlight is the Hold the Jackpot bonus round. Fill all positions to win the 2,500x Grand Jackpot, which is also the overall potential.
