Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness Review

Dubbed ‘The Godfather of Shock Rock’, Alice Cooper (real name Vincent Damon Furnier) has provided us with 50+ years of bizarre scene shows involving electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and snakes, to name just a few of his infamous stage props. He fronted the Alice Cooper band for many years, while also releasing plenty of solo albums. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend is now getting immortalized in a Play’n Go release called Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness.

This installment in PnG’s heavy metal range is clearly inspired by Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, but this is far from a copycat/reskin job. The creepy and morbid atmosphere has been captured nicely, and Alice himself is in chains beside the 5x5 grid. Collecting winning symbols to unlock wild modifiers (and eventually Reality Spins) is the name of the game. If you manage to turn loose the Alice mega walking wild at the same time, the 3,000x potential is within reach.

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness Features

You win by landing 4 to 15+ matching symbols in a cluster (vertically or horizontally adjacent), and 15+ premiums pay between 40 and 200 x your stake. The book Wild steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combinations, but it holds no value of its own.

Sometimes, on non-winning spins only, you will trigger what’s called a Reality Effect.

These are random modifiers, and you get 1 of 4 when the feature triggers:

  • Insane Asylum - turns all premium symbols into the same premium symbol.
  • The Dungeon - turns all low-value symbols into random premium symbols.
  • Temptation Room - awards a wild, and turns symbols into matching symbols.
  • Chamber of Horrors - destroys a bunch of symbols, and fills the empty space with wilds.

All winning symbols are removed, and new and/or existing symbols tumble down to fill the gaps. This cascading feature goes on as long as you keep winning, and winning symbols are collected to charge the Hat of Madness Meter. This triggers different Hat of Madness modifiers, depending on how many winning symbols you collect in the same cascading sequence:

  • 10 winning symbols collected adds 1 or 2 wilds to the next cascade.
  • 25 winning symbols collected adds 3-6 wilds to the next cascade.
  • 50 winning symbols collected awards 3 Reality Spins.
  • 75 winning symbols collected awards 3 Reality Spins with an x2 multiplier.
  • 85 winning symbols collected awards 3 Reality Spins with an x5 multiplier.

You win only the highest achieved tier if you trigger Reality Spins, and you get to choose between the Insane Asylum, The Dungeon, Chamber of Horrors and the Temptation Room Reality Effects. The modifier you choose to go with plays out at the end of each Reality Spin cascading sequence.

Special key symbols can land in all stages of the game, and you need 3 in the same cascading sequence to free the chained Alice Cooper on the right-hand side. The keys leave wilds behind when they are collected, and Alice Cooper turns into a fully expanded walking wild on reels 2, 3 or 4 when he’s turned loose.

He walks 1 step left or right per cascade, and you might get 3 to 6 regular wilds per step he takes during Reality Spins.

The 200 Spins Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness Experience

We grind along in the base game for a while, until a lengthy cascading sequence unchains Alice Cooper, and eventually also triggers the Reality Spins feature. We got the lowest-tier Reality Spins feature though, and we went with The Dungeon Reality Effect. All the fun starts around the 2:30-mark, and you can see for yourself how it all played out in the 5:37-minute highlights video below.

Review Summary

Play’n Go has certainly released some heavy hitters in their heavy metal series so far, and considering the dark subject matter and star level, Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness is surprisingly tame with regards to potential. 3,000x is still a bit above the 2,000x you get in the Rich Wilde predecessor, but it can hardly compare to installments like Testament and Hammerfall, the latter awarding 10x as much if the max win is cracked.

If you can look past that however, which might be easier if you’re a diehard Cooper fan, this horror-inspired Shock Rock slot has a lot going for it in terms of features. Hat of Madness modifiers can prolong cascading sequences, and so can Reality Effects. It all culminates in the Reality Spins features, with or without a freed-up Cooper walking wild and/or a win multiplier up to x5. Audiovisually pleasing for sure, but even a 5,000x potential would have made it more attractive to fence sitters.

Pros

  • 3 keys trigger Cooper expanded walking wild
  • 4 random Reality Effect modifiers on some losing spins
  • Collect winning symbols to get wilds or reality spins
  • 3 Reality Spins w/ Reality Effect modifier choice

Cons

  • 3,000x potential is tame for this subject and volatility
  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges
