Diamond Vortex Review
Play’n Go is a master when it comes to creating highly innovative and unusual grid slots, and Diamond Vortex is close to a masterpiece of moving parts and chain reaction wins that build up to the eventual climactic bonus round. The game has a cosmic vibe, although the visuals are a bit more diffuse than their very impressive previous grid slot, Gold Volcano. The symbols fall from above to fill the hexagonal grid, and the whole thing runs on a cluster pays engine with a cascading wins feature to boot.
The setup is similar to Honey Rush (also from Play’n Go), and it all plays out on a 4-5-6-7-6-5-4 grid. You can place bets between 20p and £100 per spin here, which is a fairly standard bet range most players will be happy with. The backdrop is a swirling nebula of some kind, and at the very center of the vortex grid is a Core Wild. This wild will actually consume sticky wilds to build a progressive multiplier that can reach as high as 20x.
This is the key to the game’s highest possible payout of 5,000x, which is a common potential from this developer. All the symbols rotate when you win, except for the winning symbols which are removed. Rotating with them is a Spot at the bottom of each of the 3 grid circles, and this can merge with a Zone on the top of the ring to transform all symbols in the relevant ring into randomly chosen matching symbols. It all comes to a head when you get a bonus symbol into a Zone, as this triggers the free spins feature. This means, among other things, that the progressive multiplier does not reset between spins.

What are the bonus features?
Not only does Diamond Vortex slot look unusual, but it comes with an unusual amount of features also. We will walk you through everything here, but we can promise you that it’s a lot less complicated than it might sound when you actually get started with the game.
It all plays out in 3 concentric rings, and each ring comes with a Zone (dark spot) at the top of the ring. At the bottom of the ring is a highlighted Spot, and this spot will rotate along with the symbol until it merges with the Zone at the top.
This Rotate feature is activated every time you land a winning cluster.
The outer ring moves clockwise, the centre ring moves anti-clockwise, while the innermost ring also moves clockwise. As the winning symbols are removed, the remaining symbols move as described above, before the new symbols drop from above to fill the gaps. Only the Spot at the bottom moves around with the symbols, while the Zone at the top never moves. You will also benefit from 2 different wild symbols in this game, namely sticky wilds and something called a Core wild. The core wild is found at the very center of the vortex grid, while sticky wilds might land during cascades. The sticky wild remains in play if it’s part of a winning cluster, but it will jump one ring closer to the center core wild for each cascading win it partakes in.
The sticky wilds will be sucked into the core wild after reaching the innermost ring, and this is called the Consume feature. It makes the core wild into a multiplier wild, and it increases with +1 for each sticky wild it consumes. You can get a core wild multiplier up to 20x this way, but the multiplier only applies to wins involving the core wild. The core wild multiplier resets to 1x on every new spin.
When the bottom Spot has rotated around and merged with a top Zone, it activates the Transform feature.
This feature turns all the symbols in the ring into identical symbols. You will usually get different symbols per ring, but filling the grid with identical symbols is possible this way. The Spot returns to the bottom again on every new spin.Free spins in Diamond VortexThe free spins bonus round is triggered in a somewhat original way here. Basically, you need to rotate a bonus symbol into a Zone, and this gives you 5 free spins whenever it happens. Now the Spots will not return to the bottom between spins, and the Core multiplier wild will also not reset between spins. You can also land new bonus symbols here, and get 5 new spins if one of them reaches the core before the free spins round is over.
How to play
We know that the gameplay might sound a bit complicated when you read about it, and there is no doubt that Play‘n Go has created something quite unique with Diamond Vortex slot.
The interface is still more or less what you might be used to from this developer, except that the spin button now looks like a vortex. We will walk through all the essentials here, and get you good and ready to play this game in no-time. You can start by checking out the paytable via the “i” button down to the left. This opens up the info section for you, and you can scroll through a brief description of each of the bonus features. They come with nice illustrations, which might make them easier to understand, and the actual paytable will pop up on the second last slide.
It’s a dynamic paytable, per usual from this developer, and this means that the symbol values will be updated according to your chosen bet level. You need between 6 and 35 matching symbols in a cluster to win in this game, and the highest paying symbol is the red crystal which pays 100x your stake for 35+ in a cluster.
Diamond VortexThe avalanche feature makes sure that winning symbols are removed, and new winning chances drop down from above. You can scroll through the bet range via the arrows on each side of the middle display, and set your bet level anywhere between 20p and £100 per spin. The small lightning icon down to the left turns on the fast play feature, and you can also toggle on/off the game sound via the speaker icon next to it.
The button that looks like a smaller version of the spin button takes you into the Autoplay feature settings.
Here you can choose between 10 and 100 autospins, and also set different limits for wins and losses to make the feature stop. Of course, you can also spin the reels manually, if you prefer it the “old school” way.Where to play Diamond Vortex?

The 200 Spins Diamond Vortex Experience
If you put this game on autospin, you’ll probably find yourself fixated at the non-moving core wild in the middle, and it kind of feels like you're being sucked into a black hole at times. However, even with the fast play turbo switched on, the pace is a bit too slow for our taste. We would like to get sucked in faster, if that makes sense.
The mechanics of the game are still quite a satisfying sight to behold, but it could have scored even higher than 6.5 out of 10 on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” gameplay scale with a higher tempo. The volatility is high enough though, and we kept getting smaller wins for a while when we started our 200 spins test session. The potential is always there for some massive cascading wins action, and you never know when destiny will strike.
For us it happened towards the middle of our session, and what happens just demonstrates how this game can shine when things finally go your way. We just kept winning one cascade after another, and we got plenty of wilds to feed the progressive multiplier in the middle. It was quite nerve wracking to see how far we could go with this, and the Transform feature saved our hide more than one time.
We benefited from a 10x multiplier in the end, and this gave us a “super big win” of 134.95x our stake. After this we went back to landing smaller wins and dead spins again for a while, until we suddenly triggered the free spins round. We got 5 spins with a 4x starting multiplier, and crossed our fingers for another big win now that the multiplier does not reset.
The transform feature did it’s magic here too, and we got a fair amount of cascades. We didn’t come close to our massive base game win however, but got away with 32.95x our stake in the end. This only proves that the base game can dish out solid payouts in this game too, and you are not really that dependent on triggering the bonus round.
Review Summary
Diamond Vortex is an impressive piece of “machinery”, and it comes with so many moving parts and features that you might be a bit overwhelmed at first sight. It’s surprisingly easy to get into the game however, and Play’n Go has put everything together in a way that’s pleasing to the eye. Audiovisually, the game is on the simpler side, with a vague cosmic backdrop and soothing otherworldly music to boot.
The volatility is high, but not really brutal, and there is nothing to say on the 5,000x potential either. When things don’t go your way nothing much happens here, but when everything works in your favor it’s a pure pleasure to behold the mechanics at work. The game is constantly working towards a climax of intertwining features and this is a very competent grid slot we think most players will enjoy.
Pros
- Merging ring Spots and Zones symbol transformation
- Progressive core wild multiplier consuming moving sticky wilds
- Free spins where the progressive multiplier don’t reset
- High volatility and 5,000x max win potential
Cons
- Customizable RTP ranges is something to beware of

Since this is a highly unusual game, you cannot expect too many exactly like it out there. That being said, we’ve managed to pull a few out of the hat as usual. Play’n Go is known for making solid and innovative grid slots, but we also found a similar game from Relax Gaming. Anyway, you can read all about each game, and try the demo version, via the links below.
Tesla (Relax) - comes with a hexagonal grid, not unlike the game at hand. It also sports an impressively high RTP of 98.09 %, which alone should make this an attractive title. The symbols start in the center of the grid here, and they become “electrified” as they connect into winning clusters.
Gold Volcano - is a Play’n Go grid slot literally built up in the shape of the background vulcano. The symbols are pushed up from below together with the molten lava, and the big climax happens when the volcano erupts in the bonus round. This increases the grid size in a major way, and this is really a must try game if you like novelty and unusual spectacles.
Honey Rush - is yet another Play’n Go game that plays out on a honeycombed grid. The max win potential is a solid 9,000x your stake here, which is unusually high for this developer. You will benefit from a Rush meter and Drone Colony feature here, and filling the meter triggers the Queen Colony that might fill the grid with matching symbols. A solid grid slot for sure, and with a charming theme to boot.
